THE BENJAMIN & EDITH SPAULDING
DESCENDANTS ASSOCIATION

Her Story
Sharon McMillian-Phifer is an influential advocate for lupus awareness, with a remarkable history of leadership and dedication. As an 8th generation descendant of Benjamin and Edith Spaulding, Sharon’s advocacy spans from North Carolina to California and back to Washington, D.C., where she has made her mark at the Capitol. Last March, Sharon was selected from hundreds of applicants to be among the top 14 participants in the prestigious National Lupus Research Alliance's Patient Advocates for Lupus Studies (PALS) program in Palm Springs, California.

In addition to this, Sharon is the National President of Lambda Sigma Sigma Lupus Sorority, Inc., the first lupus-focused sorority, demonstrating her commitment to raising awareness for the disease. She also plays a significant role in Las Amigas Incorporated, where she serves at multiple levels, including Whiteville Chapter President, Southeast Assistant Regional Director, and Chairperson of the National Training Team. Las Amigas Incorporated, which has been empowering communities since 1957, is a key partner in her lupus advocacy efforts.

Sharon’s work with the national lupus organizations such as Lupus Research Alliance and Lupus Foundation of America further strengthens her advocacy for the disease, emphasizing the critical need for research, education, and awareness. This year, her local chapter of Las Amigas Incorporated, the Whiteville Chapter, will celebrate its 60th anniversary, with Carolyn B. Blanks being the only chartered member remaining. Sharon’s recognition by the National Lupus Research Alliance underscores her immense contribution to the lupus community and highlights her as a vital voice in the fight against lupus.
