DURHAM —

The Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People held its annual gala Friday night, honoring several current and past leaders in Durham. T

his year the Durham Committee honored:

John Harding Lucas, a nationally recognized educator, former Hillside High School principal and past Shaw University president

Cora Cole-McFadden, a staunch community advocate for the homeless and youth populations of Durham and Durham mayor pro tempore

Ken Spaulding, a former North Carolina House of Representatives delegate, former chairman of the Durham Committee and prominent business development and land-use attorney.

The committee posthumously honored the late Carolyn P. Harris, a retired Hillside High School biology teacher and past Durham Committee Civic Committee chairwoman; and late-Mayor Chester Jenkins, Durham’s first African-American elected mayor.

The Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People, organized in 1935 by banker C.C. Spaulding, pharmacist and N.C. Central University founder James E. Shepard and other local African-American leaders and entrepreneurs, has used its collective strength to pursue social and economic rights for African-Americans and other ethnic groups. Randal Rogers, a retired NCCU business law professor, is the chairman of the DCABP.

The event was held at the Sheraton Imperial in Durham.
