Thelma Spaulding Harmon, daughter of the late Andrew Martin Spaulding and Hattie Jane Moore Spaulding, was born January 14, 1923 in Columbus County, North Carolina, and departed the life on August 5, 2012 at Premier Living in Lake Waccamaw, North Carolina.
She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School of Cosmetology in Durham, North Carolina. She did further study at Winston-Salem Teachers College.
Thelma was the owner operator of Thelma's Beauty Salon in Clarkton, North Carolina for nine years. She relocated to Yonkers, New York and was employed by Revlon Health Care for twenty-five years. After retirement from Revlon, she returned to Columbus County and became very active in religious, civic, and social organizations. She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church of Clarkton, North Carolina, serving on many church committees as needed. She was a member of Owlettes Club, a cabinet member of the Tri-County Campaign Committee of the United Negro College Fund, Inc., and a former member of the Parmi Nous Matrons Club, in which she served as president. She received the Columbus County UNCF Distinguished Service Award in 2002.
Thelma was married to Gaston Staten. This union produced two children - Derrick and Lugretta. After their divorce, she married Tasker Harmon, who also preceded her in death.
Survivors include, son, Derrick R. Staten (Joyce) of Lumberton, North Carolina; daughter, Lugretta M. Staten, of Novato, California; grandson, Derrick R. Staten, Jr. of Lumberton, North Carolina; granddaughter, Tara M. Staten of Charlotte, North Carolina; great-grandson, Derrick Paul Staten of Houston, Texas; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Resolution of Sorrow and Respect

“Since it has pleased Almighty God to take our beloved sister on to her reward where she will join that great cloud of witnesses in the heavens”
WHEREAS, our Cousin Thelma Spaulding Harmon is a direct descendant of our Ancestors Benjamin and Edith Spaulding, of Columbus County, North Carolina and the daughter of the late Andrew Martin Spaulding and Hattie Jane Moore Spaulding.
WHEREAS, our beloved Cousin Thelma was a regular attendee of our bi-annual family reunions and enjoyed the activities and the time she spent with family members during the reunions.
WHEREAS, our beloved Cousin has served her family and community with dignity, love, respect and unselfishness, we pray that the Divine Comforter will bring peace to our most inner souls,
WHEREAS, it has saddened the hearts of the Descendants of Benjamin and Edith Spaulding, friends, and love ones on this earth, we surrender her to our Almighty Heavenly Father, because He has assured us that in His arms will be a peaceful rest,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that we embrace the family because all of us have a common bond that will connect us for the rest of your lives. We cannot replace Cousin Thelma Spaulding Harmon, but will continue to demonstrate the love, compassion and example of excellence that she has shown to others throughout her life.
Finally, BE IT RESOLVED, that this resolution be tendered to the family and a copy kept in our family archives as a humble expression of our heartfelt sympathy and resignation to the Almighty Heavenly Father with the love, grace and mercy He has granted to us
